Abalone is also known as Paua shells in New Zealand, and Perlemon (from the Dutch ‘mother of pearl’) in Southern Africa. It is sustainably farmed today where the size of the shells are checked before fishing. They usually come from gale swept coastal waters where the unique iridescent swirls of blues and greens are produced by the rich sediment of pollution-free icy waters. Although not a gemstone, it is reputed to have healing properties. Abalone shells are intimately connected with the sea and can represent the tides of emotion, can develop psychic and creative ability, are connected with family and can encourage calmness.

They are commonly used nowadays for holding burning sage when cleansing and smudging.
